Cooling Sheets: How to Choose Fabrics and Weaves for Hot Sleepers

Īsā atbilde

The best fabric for cooling sheets is linen or cotton percale for most hot sleepers: linen feels cool to the touch and dries fast, and percale is crisp and light. Choose lyocell or bamboo rayon for a smoother, silkier feel. Avoid polyester microfiber if you sweat.

Cooling sheets can’t lower your room temperature, but the right fabric makes the layer against your skin feel less hot and sticky. Here is what makes a sheet feel cooler, how six fabrics compare, percale versus sateen, what thread count and “bamboo” labels mean, and when night sweats need more than new sheets.

What makes a sheet feel cooler

Three things decide how warm a sheet feels.

  • Touch. Linen feels cool to the touch because of its relatively high thermal conductivity, the same reason metal feels cold. The effect is strongest when you get in or roll onto a fresh patch, and it fades as the fabric warms.
  • Moisture. Fibers that absorb sweat and dry quickly, such as linen, cotton, lyocell and rayon, keep the surface from feeling damp. Polyester absorbs very little, so sweat can stay on your skin and feel clammy.
  • Airflow. Lighter, more open fabrics let warm, humid air escape from under the covers. Heavy, dense ones hold it in.

Sheets are one layer. A thick duvet, fleece pajamas or a warm room will outweigh them; see our guide to light, noise and temperature in the bedroom for the rest of the setup.

Best fabric for cooling sheets: 6 fabrics compared

“Cooling” is a marketing word with no fabric standard behind it. What you’re really choosing is a fiber and a weave.

Audums How it feels With sweat Good fit if Pievērsiet uzmanību
Cotton percale Crisp, matte and light; a tight plain weave Absorbs moisture You sleep hot and like a crisp, hotel-style feel Firmer at first; softens with washing
Cotton sateen Soft and silky with a slight sheen; a satin weave Absorbs moisture You run only a little warm and want softness Drapes closer, so many hot sleepers find it warmer; less durable than plain weave
Linen Textured and cool to the touch Very absorbent; dries faster than cotton You sweat at night or live somewhere hot Wrinkles easily; can feel rough until washed a few times
Lyocell (Tencel) Smooth, soft and drapey Absorbs more than cotton You want a smooth feel that handles sweat Often blended; check the fiber percentage
Rayon or viscose from bamboo Very soft, smooth and cool in the hand Highly absorbent You like a silky feel Sold as “bamboo” but made from pulp by a chemical process
Polyester microfiber Smooth and soft; resists wrinkles Absorbs very little Easy care matters most and you rarely sweat Sweat can stay on the skin

Blends sit between their parts: a cotton and polyester blend resists wrinkles better than pure cotton but absorbs less.

Which fabric is best for you

If you… Best fabric Runner-up Kāpēc
Wake up sweaty Linen Cotton percale Both absorb sweat, and linen dries faster than cotton
Feel hot under the covers and like a crisp bed Cotton percale Linen A light, matte plain weave that doesn’t cling
Want a smooth, silky feel Lyocell (Tencel) Bamboo rayon Smooth like sateen but more absorbent
Run only a little warm Cotton sateen Lyocell Softer and heavier; fine if you rarely sweat
Want easy care above all Cotton percale Polyester microfiber Microfiber resists wrinkles but holds sweat on the skin

If you can only change one thing, a linen flat sheet over a cotton fitted sheet gets most of the benefit: the layer on top of you is the one that traps heat and sweat.

Percale or sateen for hot sleepers

Both are weaves, usually of cotton. Percale is a plain weave, one thread over and one under, which makes a firm, matte fabric that feels crisp and light. Sateen floats threads over several others before tucking under, which gives it a sheen, a silkier surface and a heavier drape.

Many hot sleepers prefer percale because it sits lightly on the skin and doesn’t cling. Sateen suits people who run only slightly warm and want softness. For more texture and faster drying, put a linen flat sheet over a cotton fitted sheet.

Thread count and bamboo labels

Thread count adds up the lengthwise and crosswise threads in one square inch of fabric. Percale starts around 180 to 200, and linen specialists say quality stops improving beyond about 400. Very high counts are often inflated by counting each strand of a twisted yarn as a thread. For a hot sleeper, a mid-range percale matters more than a big number.

The US Federal Trade Commission says most “bamboo” textiles are really rayon, typically made with harsh chemicals, with no trace of the plant left in the finished fiber. Unless a product is made directly from bamboo fiber, it should be labeled rayon or “rayon made from bamboo”, and a claim that it keeps bamboo’s antimicrobial properties needs proof. Bamboo rayon is still soft, smooth and very absorbent, so read it as rayon and judge it on feel.

Fit, top layers and the rest of the bed

A fitted sheet that pops off a corner or bunches under you spoils a good fabric. Measure your mattress depth, including any topper, before choosing. Wren’s 35 cm pocket (about 14 inches) is made for a mattress plus topper.

On hot nights, many people skip the duvet and sleep under a flat sheet, and linen suits this because it dries fast. A comforter affects your temperature more than the sheets under it, so keep it light. The Tundra cooling comforter, for example, has a smooth side its listing describes as cool to the touch and a breathable knit side.

Match your pillow setup to your sheets: see our cooling pillow guide and silk vs satin pillowcases. For sleepwear, see cooling pajamas for women. If you are also changing your pillow, the two-sided Amity Comfort Cervical Pillow has a contoured face and a hollow face, so you can try both shapes on your own bed.

Night sweats and hot flashes

The NHS describes night sweats as sweating so much that your night clothes and bedding are soaking wet, even though where you sleep is cool. Common causes include menopause hot flashes, anxiety, some medicines, low blood sugar, and alcohol or drug use. Hot flashes can happen at night during perimenopause and menopause.

Breathable sheets can make these nights more comfortable: linen and cotton absorb sweat, and a spare pillowcase by the bed makes a quick change easy. They won’t change the cause. See a doctor if night sweats regularly wake you or worry you, come with a high temperature, cough or diarrhea, or you’re losing weight for no clear reason.

Sheet Veids Listed fabric Izmēri Cena
Wren Fitted Cotton Sheet Fitted sheet 100% cotton Twin, Full, Queen, King; fits mattresses up to 35 cm (about 14 in) deep $69.90–$99.90 (by size)
Flax Linen Flat Sheet — White Flat sheet 100% stonewashed French flax linen 6 sizes from 120 × 220 cm to 260 × 280 cm $99.90–$169.90 (by size)
Boreal Cooling Sheet Set Fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases Stretch knit (fiber not stated) Twin XL to Cali King; 18 in listed depth; 9 colors $82.90–$117.90 (by size)
Grip Cooling Fitted Sheet Fitted sheet Regenerated cellulose fibre blend, stretch construction Twin to Cali King $29.90–$49.90 (by size)

Facts come from each product listing; we have not lab-tested these sheets. Regenerated cellulose is the fiber family that includes lyocell and rayon. The Boreal listing gives a stretch knit but not the fiber, so ask if fiber matters to you.

Pirms pirkuma

  1. Read the fiber label. Look for a fiber and percentage, such as 100% cotton or 100% linen. “Cooling” and “bamboo” alone tell you little; if a listing doesn’t state the fiber, ask before you buy.
  2. Choose the weave. Percale for crisp, sateen for soft, linen for texture and fast drying.
  3. Measure depth and size. Add any topper to your mattress depth and compare it with the pocket depth. For flat sheets, check the listed dimensions against your bed.
  4. Check care. The Boreal and Grip listings say machine wash cold and tumble dry low. Linen wrinkles easily and is easiest to smooth while damp.

Bieži uzdotie jautājumi

What is the best fabric for cooling sheets?

For most hot sleepers, linen or cotton percale. Linen feels cool to the touch, absorbs sweat and dries fast; percale is crisp, light and matte. Lyocell and bamboo rayon suit you if you want a smoother, silkier feel that still absorbs moisture. Polyester microfiber suits hot sleepers least.

Do cooling sheets really work?

They can make a warm bed feel less hot and sticky, but they won’t chill you. Breathable, absorbent fabrics such as percale, linen and lyocell let heat and sweat escape better than dense or synthetic ones. Room temperature and your covers still matter.

What are cooling sheets made of?

There is no standard. Most are cotton percale, linen, lyocell (Tencel), rayon made from bamboo, or polyester microfiber sold as cool-touch. Check the fiber on the label.

Are bamboo sheets cooler than cotton?

Bamboo sheets are usually rayon, which feels smooth and absorbs moisture well, so many people find them cooler than cotton sateen. Crisp cotton percale and linen are good choices too.

Is linen or bamboo better for hot sleepers?

Both suit hot sleepers. Linen feels cool to the touch and dries quickly but is textured and wrinkles easily. Bamboo rayon is smooth and silky and also very absorbent. Choose by the feel you prefer.

Is percale or sateen better for hot sleepers?

Percale, for most people. Its plain weave is matte, crisp and light on the skin, while sateen’s satin weave is silkier and drapes closer. Choose sateen if softness matters more than crispness.

Can cooling sheets help with night sweats or hot flashes?

They can make waking up hot more comfortable, since linen and cotton absorb sweat, but they don’t change the cause. See a doctor if night sweats regularly wake you or come with a high temperature, cough, diarrhea or unexplained weight loss.

Can I return sheets after sleeping on them?

Yes. Calm Eden orders come with a 30-day risk-free trial from delivery, and opened and used items are accepted. Change-of-mind return shipping is the customer’s cost; see the refund policy for the full terms.
